Make sure you mark your calendar and attend one of the business education workshops that we’re teaching throughout Chicago in 2014. Here’s what we have planned in August and September:

 

 

 

 

Recording and Reporting Your Restaurant’s Financial Statements & Payroll – Wednesday, August 20th from 3-4:30pm at the City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection, 121 N. LaSalle Street, Chicago, IL

We’re teaming up with Mike Francone from AmCheck for the fifth installment of our workshops series “A Comprehensive Guide to Starting a Restaurant” with the City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection. During this presentation, you will learn important accounting principles and establish guidelines for your cash flow, accounts receivables, and accounts payable. We will review important tax requirements, including how to properly report tips to the IRS, and we’ll discuss penalties for late payments. This session will also cover payroll, including filing W2 forms, determining payroll taxes, enforcing employees’ wage garnishes, and understanding job codes. Finally, we will discuss what qualities to look for when selecting the right restaurant accountant and payroll services provider.

Buying and Selling a Business: Find, Evaluate & Negotiate – Wednesday, September 17th from 10am – 1pm at SCORE Chicago Office, Citicorp Center, 500 W. Madison Street, Suite 1150, Chicago, IL

Learn how buying a business can be an alternative to starting up a new business. Also learn how to analyze new business opportunities and negotiate a business purchase or sale. We will discuss:

1. Qualifications to own a business: Find out what it takes to own a business and to sell your business.
2. Pros and Cons of buying into a business: What are they?
3. How to select a business or franchise: Find the best way to select a business for you.
4. Due diligence: Believe, but verify!
5. How do you valuate the business? What method is best for me?
6. How do you negotiate? Successful negotiation is a win-win situation.
7. Financing options: How do you finance the purchase? How do you set the sale price if you are selling?

Lunch and Network: Identifying, Capitalizing, and Protecting Your Intellectual Property – Thursday, September 18th  from 12-1:30pm at the SBDC at Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive, Bldg E, Room E105

Your company’s intellectual property assets – intangible assets known as trade secrets, patents, trademarks, and copyrights – can be strong differentiators in a highly competitive marketplace and an excellent way for you to generate additional revenue in order to increase your bottom line. As your business continues to grow, you must learn to identify ways to capitalize on and protect your intellectual property assets within and outside your organization. This session will teach you practical approaches on how to protect your business and implement a solid intellectual property plan.
